Christine Elliott Speaks Out in Order to Speed Up Durham Residents

(Queen’s Park) – Conservative M.P.P. for Whitby-Ajax, Christine Elliott, stood up in the legislature today with questions about why the McGuinty Liberals continue to ignore the transportation needs of those living in Durham Region.

“Gridlock is a serious problem in many parts of the Greater Toronto Area, but nowhere is it worse than in Durham Region,” Elliott said to the House this afternoon.  “People are very concerned about the effect gridlock is having,” she continued, highlighting the specific complaints she received from her constituents as she went door to door during the recent by-election. “People’s frustration with the lack of action by the McGuinty government on the gridlock issue was evident.”

An extension of Highway 407 from its current end point at Brock Road in Pickering, over to Highway 115, is essential to prevent gridlock from stifling both economic growth in the manufacturing sector and community growth promoted by after-work volunteer organizations.  Most importantly, the several hours required to get home at night hurts families.

“The recent budget tabled by the McGuinty Liberals was touted as the transportation and infrastructure budget, yet there was nothing in it for transportation in Durham Region,” remarked Elliott, “This is totally unacceptable.”

Elliott strongly urged the government to give this project the priority it requires.
