Elliott, O’Toole optimistic that Durham Region and local auto
workers union will collaborate on swift solution to transit strike
(Queen’s Park) – Durham Region MPPs Christine Elliott and John O’Toole are hopeful that news of a return to the bargaining table by Canadian Auto Worker Local 222 and the region means real progress can be made to end a transit strike that has left many residents to find alternate ways of getting to and from their homes.
“I am confident that the two sides of this conflict will work together to come to an agreement suitable for all parties,” stated Christine Elliott, Member of Provincial Parliament for Whitby-Ajax. “There is certainly a concern that the situation is becoming increasingly problematic for vulnerable people in the region.”
“I am concerned over how the transit strike affects seniors, students, and persons with special needs,” echoed John O’Toole, Member of Provincial Parliament for Durham. “I am encouraged that the parties are back at the bargaining table.”
The strike began earlier this month as a result of a clash between the two sides regarding several issues, largely with respect to employee benefits. Parties are set to resume negotiations by the week’s end.
